March 15, 2021 Old Man River

The river is quiet. The orange tipped stakes are the only visible remains of the Iditarod Trail. A fresh coat of snow hides dog excrement. The telltale signs of 600 dogs. We didn’t see any fishing or snow machining. This was the last event before break up. As the snow stops falling and the junk that lies beneath the white blanket prevails the complexion of the town is transformed from winter wonderland to a continuous junk yard. We’ll miss out on that part. Our memories will look beautiful. We fly out of here on March 31 and arrive back home on Poisson d’Avril.

It was 3 above in the morning and reached 16 above during my run/walk accompanying Terry skiing. I didn’t need a jacket or gloves.

Terry left his quarantine and went straight to the store. It was great for him to be out of my shadow and have freedom to buy what he longed for and see new masked faces up close.

  1. 600 dogs pooping – omg, I never even considered that! Omg. And breakup already? That is going to be nasty when the snow melts. Somehow I thought you guys were up there for several more months, but it will be great to have you back here. I am thinking of going up this summer, of course nothing as adventuresome like what you are doing, but I hope I can talk my ex neighbors into a fishing trip in the Prince William Sound. Officially I have about 300+ lbs of salmon and halibut in their freezers – we’d fish together and all of it would go into their freezers. Goes quickly when you haul in a 100+ lb halibut. I’d walk over and get whatever I wanted to eat for dinner that night. Full disclosure, I ate a lot over at their house, but I was pretty good at hauling the fish in. The trade-off was that I paid for the gas for their boat so they wouldn’t forget to bring me along 😉 Fabulous memories. They built a log house from scratch, literally. It took two years while they camped in tents. One tent for all the tools, one tent for eating/cooking, and one tent for sleeping. That’s the reason I have a log house in Tahoe. You’ve got to come and check it out!
